thank you for pointing out breastfeeding is species specific and normal in the way that donor milk and formula are not. having 3 infants who absolutely refused bottles of expressed milk and would ONLY drink from the breast i am fortunate to have had time and resources to serve on demand. some infants will take a bottle mine would not. i can't even imagine what would have happened had a man tried. i don't need a research paper to tell me about the mother/infant dyad

The man who insisted on 'breastfeeding' his baby in the first week of life actively got in the way of the mum and baby establishing feeding. I fed my 3 babies for over a year each and the first week or so is always fiddly, teaching the baby to latch. And mum's hormones are swapping over from pregnancy to nursing, the surges of emotion and baby blues can be overwhelming... and the father ought to be supporting mum, changing nappies and juggling visitors. Definitely not inserting himself into the breastfeeding dyad. The poor women and babies who suffer this weirdness. And I wonder how often this male disruption of breastfeeding causes nursing to fail? How often do these babies end up on formula? And if dad doesn't support breastfeeding (and inserting himself in between mum and bub is the ultimate disruption and disrespect) what is the physical and emotional effect on mother and baby?
Because male lactation always fails, these babies always end up being formula fed, especially if the mother/baby relationship was interrupted during the critical period of establishing lactation.
Have any papers been published about the effects on breastfeeding success for mothers and babies when another person attempts to feed the baby? Or is it only pro trans women stuff?
There is a lot of research around the deleterious effects of interfering with the establishment of lactation and breastfeeding. From this angle, it doesn't matter if it's some man breastfeeding, a baby's father insisting on his right to bottle feed or for any other reason. Lactation commences as a hormonal process and any interruption is going to have a negative effect.
