The reason that women are being erased from the concept of childbirth is to make us into a commodity. An egg-producer can sell her eggs, a womb-haver can rent her womb, a milk producer can sell her milk. On the other hand suggesting women sell their babies is a bit icky, it won’t go down well in lovely liberal America. So reduce women to working body parts and services, buy those parts and services, and the patriarchy wins with bells on while pretending to itself it is being “kind”. Rich female celebrities get babies without pain or mess, or any time off work, and men get babies without having to engage with women at all. The only losers are poor women, probably in another country, and who cares about them?

Well said. Lucy. As a retired midwife who practiced for 43 years ,i ,too,am appalled that so many midwives seem to be supporting this ideological belief system which bears no relationship to biological reality. Do women have to die or suffer serious harm in childbirth before alarms are raised. Given that the state of maternity care in England has been heavily criticised for its poor quality in many areas, with some maternity units being placed under SPECIAL MEASURES ,you would think that the NHS bosses would be focussing on that rather than ideilogical claptrap. My midwifery career was all in Scotland, but i dread to think what its bren turned into ,curtesy of our Woke government !! Woke /queer turns everything to ashes and the more people speak up for truth and reality ,the better. Thank you ,Lucy. Keep it up 👍👋x

Like you, I remain astonished at some midwifery colleagues who appear happy to abandon reality for ideology and I worry for the future of every facet of health care when midwifery/nursing/medical students are told essentially that bodies don't matter, feelings and beliefs do.

Great piece Lucy. In New Zealand they have removed the word women from midwifery care. Women are now referred to as birthing people, chest feeders and the old “cervix haver”. So, the majority of prenatal care and education in the health system is run by women, who have turned their backs on women to adopt this BS to be more gender neutral to who I might ask??? The less than 1% who are non binary but who are actually women/men who reject their biological sex and all the so called trappings and chains that come with it. Imagine working in the health sector with all this tip toeing around confused patients it’s enough to make you want to run for the hills !! These political rainbow groups who have their tentacles far and wide throughout government departments in NZ are changing language and imposing expectations of modelling best practices to cater for the less then 1% of the population. What a load of rubbish.

Lucy, one of the essential points I take away from this brilliant piece, is that the transgender community is as much a victim of this emphasis in obscuring, ignoring, hard science, as anyone else. Those who claim to be supporting the transgender demographic don't seem to care for the physical health of this group --How is it empowering to sacrifice one's health with experimental treatments!? If HEALTH is not their main concern, then what is? Is it all about increasing sales of hormone therapies and other pseudo-medical (cosmetical) interventions? Who wins? We already know who stands to lose :(

In the USA at least, it's the obscenely massive profits that partially drive this. Everybody wins under the health as a business model: clinics, doctors, insurance companies, you name it. When you monetize ill health, there is no incentive to wellness. The only losers are people who are turned into medical cash cows, with the transgender cult being a particularly wonderful example as this turns healthy bodies into ones who will need to remain on the medical track forever. This will continue until the detransitioners start winning their court cases and getting payouts. Then, I suspect we may find that "gender affirming care" is not as vital as previously claimed.
